Purpose of Organization

“Map the Vote” is a group of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) professionals committed to using the tools of our trade to enhance citizen participation in the electoral arena and thereby strengthen our democracy and win back the congress and the white house in 2006 and 2008.

Services that GIS tools can provide to campaigns and especially field, voter registration, voter id and GOTV operations include:

  • Automated generation of precinct maps on demand – either batched by area (e.g. county or congressional district) or as individual requests through a customized web interface;
  • Mapping of supporters/volunteers/voters in a GIS system allowing analysis and displays of problems, successes, goals, and possibilities;
  • Analysis and display/presentation of current electoral data as it relates to demographic data;
  • Addition of geographic attributes (e.g. precinct, CD, city, other political district) to supporter or voter records – thereby enabling more refined analysis and display;
  • Preparation of compelling and informative display of data for use by media, fundraising or recruitment efforts;
  • Assistance in targeting decisions at local/regional level (e.g. identify characteristics of areas of strongest support, then identify similar areas with sub-normal support, then consider prospecting for supporters/donors in latter areas)
  • Improved standardized reports – in both tabular and visual/map form – allowing leadership at all levels to more effectively grasp operational progress.

While top-level national campaign consultants will have these and other capacities at their disposal it is our goal to provide these tools to the many layers of activity below that level including state and Congressional District level operations.
